Understanding what to expect during your physical recovery can empower you to navigate this period with more grace, less stress.

What’s typical after vaginal birth:

  1. Lingering contractions. This brings on cramping, but it is temporary while your uterus shrinks back to its normal size.

  2. Postpartum bleeding, known as lochia. In the first few days, bleeding will be heavier, similar to a period.

  3. Soreness & swelling, especially if you were among the more than half of women who experienced vaginal tearing. While stitches typically dissolve within 1-2 weeks, it can take up to six weeks for tearing to heal.

  4. Incontinence. While this is common, it doesn’t mean you have to accept this as your new norm. Pelvic floor therapy can be an important part of your recovery.

  5. Hemorrhoids.Adding to the discomfort, you are more prone to hemorrhoids during the recovery phase as well. Sitz baths, witch hazel pads, and over-the-counter creams can help.

Remember to prioritize your well-being, seek help when needed, and celebrate the incredible strength of your body and all that it has just been through.
