Incorporating a new baby into family dinners is a wonderful way to bond and create special moments, even if they can't sit up yet or eat solid foods. Early inclusion fosters connection and establishes that mealtime isn’t just about the food – it’s about quality time.

This is a tone that will come in handy later when they do start solid foods. One of the potential triggers to picky eating is when mealtimes are hyper-focused on the foods, creating pressure. So, it’s never too early to get in the habit of treating meals as light, fun times to gather and share stories.

To include your baby, try any of these setups:

  1. If your baby has a bouncer or high chair that offers proper support for their head and neck, you can bring them to the dining table. This way, they can observe and participate in mealtime conversations.

  2. Alternatively, define a safe, comfortable floor play area near the dining table. Place a soft blanket or play mat where your baby can lie down and watch all the action.

  3. If your baby frequently interrupts dinner to be held and fed, which is normal in these early months, many parents find it helpful to babywear. This positions baby close to you, brings them to the table, and keeps your hands free to eat. A win!

As your baby grows, their participation in family dinners will evolve. Still, these early interactions can lay the foundation for positive mealtime experiences.
