Night sweats are a common postpartum symptom – and thankfully temporary!
Why do night sweats happen?
Hormone fluctuation. After birth, your estrogen and progesterone levels plummet. This nose-dive basically throws your body for a loop, triggering the sweat.
Part of it is also fluid loss. While pregnant, your body retains more fluids. After birth, your body is ready to let that go.
Breastfeeding can exacerbate night sweats because it lowers estrogen levels, and whenever estrogen levels dip low, sweating tends to be a common response. However, this doesn’t mean you’ll endure night sweats for your entire breastfeeding journey. Regardless of how you’re feeding baby, postpartum night sweats typically resolve in a few weeks.
