Adjusting your dog or cat to life with your newborn requires careful planning and consideration to ensure a smooth transition for everyone involved. Here are some general best practices:

Dogs + babies

  1. Before your baby arrives, prepare your dog by training any needed skills and manners, such as no jumping.

  2. When you bring your baby home, have someone greet your dog first and keep them on a short leash to guide a calm introduction. Allow them to observe the baby and gradually approach and sniff the baby’s feet so long as they are calm. Interrupt to praise, then command the dog to sit or lie down.

  3. Always supervise interactions between your dog and baby, and ensure they still get regular exercise, playtime, and attention. Hiring a dog walker can help if possible.

Cats + babies

  1. Before bringing the baby home, place an item with the baby's scent (such as a blanket) near your cat's favorite spots. This helps your cat become accustomed to the new scent.

  2. When you arrive home with the baby, allow your cat to observe the baby from a distance. Provide treats and attention to reinforce positive behavior. Always prioritize your cat's comfort and stress levels, and let them decide if they want to approach the baby or not. Do not bring the baby into their space.

  3. Make sure your cat has access to safe spaces where they can retreat if they feel overwhelmed. This helps them maintain a sense of control and maintain their routines.

Remember, every pet is unique, and their reactions may vary. Monitor their behavior closely and seek professional advice if needed.
