Feeling worried or stressed is natural if your baby is born prematurely and needs to stay in the NICU. After all, they're small, fragile, and often hooked up to machines. But forming a strong bond with your baby before they leave the NICU and come home is possible.

Here are some tips to help you bond with your baby in the NICU:

  • Talk to your baby.Even if your baby can't understand you, they can still hear your voice. Talk to them about your day, your hopes and dreams, or anything else on your mind.

  • Sing to your baby.Singing is a great way to soothe and relax your baby. It can also help them learn about rhythm and melody.

  • Read to your baby.Reading is a calming and bonding experience for both you and your baby. Choose books that are colorful and have simple stories.

  • Hold your baby.Holding your baby is one of the best ways to bond with them. If your baby is too small or fragile to hold for long periods, just rest your hand on their chest or abdomen.

  • Massage your baby.Massage is a relaxing and soothing experience for both you and your baby. It can also help to reduce stress and promote healing.

  • Let your baby smell you.Babies have a strong sense of smell, and they'll love how you smell. Snuggle your baby and let them sniff your hair, neck, or clothes.

  • Spend time with your baby in the NICU.The more time you spend with your baby, the more you bond with them. Even if you can't hold them, just sit by their bedside and talk or sing to them.

Remember, bonding with your baby takes time. You might also try asking your nurse or doctor about the best ways to bond. They can offer specific advice based on your baby's condition and needs.
