Adding a light blanket over your baby's stroller might seem like a quick fix to provide shade during warmer-weather walks, but this is a firm no for safety reasons.

Never use a blanket as shade for your baby's stroller; it entraps more heat

Covering a stroller with a blanket, especially in hot weather, can significantly increase the temperature within the enclosed space—right where baby is! This sudden increase in heat can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

There are safer and more effective ways to keep babies cool in a stroller. Opt for a stroller with built-in sunshades or canopies designed to provide proper ventilation and protection from the sun's rays. Also consider:

  • Taking the shaded route whenever possible.

  • Walking during cooler times, such as early morning or late afternoon.

  • Dress your baby in lightweight, breathable clothing to prevent overheating.

  • Attaching a stroller fan that can help circulate air. Be mindful of keeping this at a safe distance so tiny fingers won't get caught in the fan.

  • If your baby is at least six months old, pack a water bottle to help with hydration.

Spread the word! It's logical to want to provide shade to your baby, but using a blanket over a stroller is unsafe.
