You're likely inundated with various baby products designed to make your life easier. One such popular product is the fresh food feeder, an accessory for easing into solids. On the list of things to prioritize, do you need this?

What is a fresh food feeder?

A fresh food feeder is a small, mesh-based pouch attached to a handle. It's designed to hold pieces of fresh fruit, vegetables, or even frozen breast milk or formula. The mesh allows your baby to suck, chew, and gnaw on the food inside without the risk of choking on larger pieces.

From a developmental lens, many pediatric occupational therapists find them to be a beneficial tool, not one that hinders. They can:

  • Promote sensory exploration of new flavors and textures

  • Support developing hand strength with an easy-to-grab handle

  • Lend safe mouthing, which fosters overall oral skill development, including the tongue motion of side to side, known as lateralization

Do you need it to start solid foods safely?

No, you can start the transition to solid foods without one and still do so safely. But fresh food feeders can be a helpful tool and a relatively affordable add-on. So, it’s up to you!
