At birth, typically a nurse who is a part of the labor and delivery team will routinely provide the following newborn assessments and interventions: an initial health assessment including heart rate, temperature, reflexes, weight, and height, the first Hepatitis B vaccination, vitamin K shot to prevent bleeding problems, and Erythromycin Eye Ointment to prevent infection. After 24 hours of life, but before discharge the nurse will do newborn health screenings, including a hearing test to ensure your baby is ready to go home safely.
