Teething begins around six months of age, but some babies may start teething as early as three months while others may not show signs until closer to their first birthday. Here are some FAQs and tips for dealing with this fussy stage.

What are the symptoms of teething?

  • Increased drooling

  • Irritability and fussiness

  • Swollen, red gums

  • Gnawing or chewing on objects

Is it true that teething can also cause fevers?

Research doesn’t support this claim. Teething may slightly elevate your baby's body temperature, but a true fever (above 100.4°F) should not be attributed to teething.

What remedies are safe for teething discomfort?

  • Chilled teething rings or toys

  • A clean washcloth, dampened and chilled in the fridge

  • Gentle pressure on baby’s gums with a clean finger for “gum massage”

When should you treat with medication?

If your baby shows persistent discomfort with teething, you can try pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) under six months old or ibuprofen (Motrin) after six months old. Keep in mind that this should be used for short-term relief.

For alternative or herbal remedies, it’s best to consult your pediatrician first.
