Encouraging your baby's interest in books is a wonderful way to foster early literacy skills and a lifelong love of reading.

Encouraging your baby's interest in books is a wonderful way to foster early literacy skills and a lifelong love of reading.

  • Create a reading routine:Whether it's before naptime, bedtime, or at other points during the day, babies thrive on routines and will come to associate reading with comfort and bonding.

  • Choose stage-appropriate books:Select books suitable for your baby's developmental stage. For very young infants, choose books with large, high-contrast images and textures they can touch and explore.

  • Read slowly and intentionally:Allow them to process what you’re saying, and point out words and pictures.

Babies have short attention spans, so don't be discouraged if they seem distracted or only interested briefly. The goal is to make reading a positive and enjoyable experience. Over time, build a diverse library of books for your baby. Include a variety of topics, styles, and authors to keep things interesting, and lead by example by letting your baby see you reading for pleasure.
