In those first weeks home, your newborn likely slept through anything. By month two, they will be increasingly sensitive to light and other stimulating items in their environment.
A sleep environment refers to the physical space you’ve cultivated for their sleep. Strive to create an uncluttered and calming space; it signals time to rest.
Use this sleep environment checklist to ensure your baby’s sleep space promotes calm:
Keep the room dark. It’s okay to have night lights to support nighttime feedings, but aim for total darkness otherwise. Use light-blocking stickers to blackout LED lights on humidifiers, sound machines, and monitors. To counter natural light, you can try blackout curtains.
Keep the room quiet.White noise can mask any ambient noise and create a more peaceful environment. Avoid mobiles or infant toys that light up and make noise.
Keep the room cool.Babies sleep best in a slightly cool room, so keep the temperature between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also turn on a ceiling or tabletop fan to help with airflow.
Use soft, lightweight fabrics.Soft, comfortable, breathable fabrics create a sense of comfort. A baby trying to regulate their temperature from being too cold or too hot will struggle to sleep.
