Should I even call these 'naps' if my baby's sleeping all the time?

Newborns spend a considerable portion of their day sleeping. Sometimes, they will sleep long stretches of up to two hours. Other times, naps will be short bursts totaling only 20 minutes. Both of these are within the range of normal for newborn napping.

As you approach 3-4 months, your baby will start getting more wakeful during the day rather than sleeping most of the day.

Until then, rest assured that your newborn’s daytime sleep is purposeful. It helps them recharge from processing new experiences transitioning from womb to world and is also vital to the rapid growth and brain development underway.

Whether or not to call it a nap doesn’t matter; All daytime sleep adds up, and it all counts.
