It can be surprising to see just how animated your newborn is, already displaying an array of facial expressions as one way to communicate with you. While many gestures are reflexes at first โ such as the open mouth rooting reflex when searching for breast or bottle โ itโs all purposeful and helpful to tune into.
Here are three common facial expressions babies may show:
The Pout: Everyone talks about that first true smile, but babies can also pout! They may even quiver their lip or furrow their brows, all in the name of fatigue, hunger, or fussiness.
The Startled Look: During the first few months, you might notice your baby suddenly widening their eyes, arching their back, and throwing their arms out. This is part of that Moro reflex, or startle reflex.
The Gaze: Your baby will often fix their eyes on your face during feeding or when you're close to them. This gaze is an essential aspect of bonding and helps them learn to recognize familiar faces. They may not hold a long gaze for very long at first, but this will increase by the time they hit three months old!
As you spend time with your newborn, you'll become more attuned to their facial expressions and gestures, helping you form a strong bond and respond to their needs effectively.
