Exposure to secondhand smoke can increase the risk of respiratory infections, ear infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in infants. Therefore, it's crucial to create a smoke-free environment for your baby.

If you are a tobacco smoker, it's best to quit or reduce smoking to minimize the transfer of harmful substances to your baby through breast milk. Even reducing the number of cigarettes smoked can help.

Is marijuana use safer?

Transfer of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of marijuana, can be transferred to breast milk. Regular and prolonged exposure to THC in breast milk may have implications for your baby's development, but this is an area where research is limited and lacking. It is advisable to err on the side of caution and avoid marijuana use while breastfeeding.

If you have questions or concerns about tobacco or marijuana use, consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance.
