Nursing in public for the first time can feel daunting, but it's a beautiful and natural part of motherhood. To help you ease into this wonderful experience, here are some tips to boost your confidence.

Opt for places that are less busy and overwhelming

The more relaxed you are, the easier the steps of latching and nursing will be. Here are some great places to feed on the go:

  • Parks are serene and spacious, making them an ideal starting point for nursing in public. Find a comfortable bench or a shady spot under a tree where you can relax with your baby.

  • Stores with lactation rooms: Many stores now have dedicated lactation rooms, providing a private and comfortable space for nursing. These can offer a bridge between the security of your home and nursing out and about within a purposefully designed space.

  • Visiting a friend who understands and supports your breastfeeding journey can be reassuring. You'll have a familiar and accommodating environment to nurse in that still counts as leaving your home!

Feeding in public also means diaper changing in public

Make sure your diaper bag is well-equipped:

  • Nursing cover (optional)

  • Extra outfit for baby

  • Extra top for you (you never know what leakage will happen)

  • Burp cloth

  • Water bottle for you (babies cannot have water until at least 6 months old)

  • Nursing pads

  • Diapers and wipes

  • Portable changing mat

Remember, breastfeeding is natural and normal. You have the right to nourish your baby wherever you are because babies are whole humans who also need to eat and drink.
