A clicking sound during breastfeeding is typically due to a latch issue, meaning something is preventing your baby from suckling your nipple properly. This is always worth addressing to ensure your baby gets all the milk they need and to protect your nipples from damage.
What could be causing an improper latch? Here are some common causes:
Tongue or Lip Tie:Tongue or lip ties refer to extra tissue connecting the tongue or lip to the mouth's floor or upper gum. Ties can restrict your baby's ability to latch properly. They are not always clearly visible to an untrained eye. It's best to get evaluated by a certified lactation consultant with advanced training in oral functioning to rule out tongue or lip ties as the issue for poor latch.
Fast letdown:If your milk flows very quickly, your baby might struggle to keep up, leading to clicking sounds as they manage their intake.
Flat or inverted nipples:If your nipples are flat or inverted, your baby might struggle to get a deep latch, leading to clicking.
If your baby frequently makes clicking sounds while breastfeeding, we suggest contacting a lactation consultant for assessment.
