One common worry new parents experience — even when there is no medical concern to precipitate: is baby getting enough milk?

This worry is common while nursing since this feeding dynamic is “invisible,” and you can’t see how many ounces your baby takes. However, in otherwise healthy babies, you can trust they are taking exactly what they need.

Still, there are things you can monitor. A baby not getting enough milk may show:

  • Weight loss (this doesn’t include the first week after birth when weight loss is expected).

  • Less than six wet diapers in a 24-hour period (applies to newborns after day 4)

  • Less than 3 dirty diapers in a 24-hour period (applies to newborns after day 4)

  • Difficulty meeting developmental milestones

If your baby is otherwise meeting their milestones, gaining weight, and producing plenty of wet and soiled diapers, these are all signs that your baby is thriving.
