Measuring how much milk your newborn takes is unnecessary. Not only is it logistically challenging while establishing breastfeeding, but babies self-regulate their intake, which means all you have to do is follow their hunger cues. There are easier ways to assess intake, such as checking your baby’s wet diapers (newborns should have at least 6 wet diapers a day) and monitoring your baby’s weight gain pattern with your pediatrician. If you are bottle feeding, newborns generally take between 1.5 to 3 oz per feeding.
