Like other developmental skills, vision has a typical trajectory but not a specific timeline that every baby will follow. That said, most babies will typically develop color vision between birth and 4 months old. Here's how this progression looks:
At birth, babies are sensitive to light and can only see high contrast, black and white.
By two weeks old, newborns can start to pick up better on dark and light shades.
During month two, babies can start to see vivid and basic colors, but it's thought that babies strongly prefer red first.
Between months 3 and 4, color vision continues to develop, and babies can see more shades, gradation, and range of colors that make our beautiful world.
So, emphasizing high-contrast, black-and-white imagery is ideal for that first month of life. Don't hesitate to introduce your newborn to color, starting with bright primary colors in month two and moving into all the colors of the rainbow by months three and four!
