After your baby's umbilical cord is cut, there will be a small, soft stump. On average, it takes about one to three weeks to dry out, shrivel, and eventually fall off. During this time, keeping the area clean and dry is crucial to prevent infection.
Follow these tips:
Avoid submerging your baby in water until the stump falls off. Sponge baths only!
Clean the baby with mild soap and water during your baby's sponge baths. Gently pat dry with a clean, soft cloth. Keep the stump dry!
Avoid covering the stump with adhesive bandages or powders.
Keep the stump exposed to air as much as possible.
Fold the diaper below the stump to prevent contact with urine and feces.
Opt for loose-fitting clothing that won't rub against the cord.
Never pull or tug at the umbilical cord stump. Tugging can lead to infection or cause unnecessary discomfort.
While slight bleeding or oozing is normal, keep an eye out for any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, pus, or a foul odor. If you notice any concerning symptoms, contact your pediatrician.
