Have you heard about the "pinch test?" This is a commonly-shared way to ensure your baby is secured in their car seat with the right level of tightness. It only takes a couple of seconds!
How it works
Secure your child in the car seat and fasten the harness straps.
Try pinching the harness straps' webbing at your child's shoulders.
The harness is too loose if you can pinch any excess strap material between your fingers.
Tighten the harness until you can no longer pinch the excess strap at the shoulders.
Is there such a thing as too tight?
The most common mistake is leaving the straps too loose. However, the straps should not be so tight that they leave red marks and restrict baby's circulation. Sometimes red marks are present related to other fit reasons, though. If unsure about your baby's fit, always check with a certified car seat safety technician.
Car Seats for the Littles is an online organization that can provide free virtual fit checks.
