Do you need a baby gate?

Ensuring your baby's safety is paramount, and one common safety tool in your arsenal might be the baby gate. However, outfitting your home with baby gates isn't one-size-fits-all; it depends on various factors and parenting philosophies.

When baby gates are necessary

Baby gates create a physical barrier, which may be non-negotiable for things like:

  1. Stairs

  2. Separation from family pets

  3. Rooms where hazards are present, such as bathrooms, kitchens, or home offices.

When baby gates are optional

If you’re feeling pressure to buy a playpen or to gate off their playroom just because your neighbor has this setup, know that you have options. Once immediate safety hazards are addressed, it’s okay to opt for a more open environment where freedom of movement and home inclusion are emphasized under supervision.

  • The RIE approach to infant caregiving and the concept of a “yes space” is one philosophy that encourages use of gates and playpens.

  • Meanwhile, the Montessori philosophy emphasizes whole-home inclusion over singularly-defined play spaces.

Every home and child is different

If your little one is exceptionally adventurous or your house has multiple levels, baby gates might be a wise choice. If, on the other hand, your child is more cautious or your home is well-childproofed, you might opt for more free movement. Either way, your presence, guidance, and supervision will be a necessary layer.
