A tongue tie, also known as ankyloglossia, is a condition in which the band of tissue that attaches the tongue to the floor of the mouth is too short or tight. This can restrict the tongue's range of motion. Restrictions are commonly diagnosed in newborns as impaired tongue function can be a root cause of difficult or painful breastfeeding. Newborns can also have a lip tie, labial frenulum breve, that restricts the mobility of their upper lip and similarly impacts breastfeeding. Both require a diagnosis for treatment recommendations.
