Both are common in a baby’s diaper area, but a yeast infection will not respond to diaper cream because it is caused by Candida albicans and needs antifungal cream. Both can appear as red and irritated skin, but yeast infections tend to appear shiny, inflamed and may even have white discharge. Frequent diaper changes and air time are important preventative measures for diaper rashes and yeast infections. To treat diaper rash, use a diaper rash cream with zinc oxide. To treat yeast infection, stop using diaper rash creams and use an antifungal cream, either over the counter or prescription strength, under the guidance of your pediatrician.
