When your baby hits four months old, it’s the first time they move into hands-on play, thanks to their whole-hand grasp! Before that, your newborn mostly played by visually tracking mobiles and adapting to the basics of tummy time. Sourcing toys and interesting things for them to look at was relatively simple. Now, their play is advancing, and it can feel a bit overwhelming. What toys are ideal for this stage? We’ve got some ideas below.
Notice how all these toys have one thing in common: they aim to match baby’s current skills. At 4-6 months, the key is to source toys that will be:
Easy for your baby to hold onto (they’re new at grasping!)
More stationary. Things that roll out of baby’s reach too easily will be frustrating since they cannot crawl after them yet. A little movement is great, but try to avoid fast-rolling things.
Simple. Toys that are too busy with too many features “all in one” can be overwhelming. Your baby will engage more when they can isolate specific skills during play.
