On the list of things no one told you when you were building your baby registry, standup diapering is probably on that list! To be fair, it’s impossible to prep for all the choices we’ll encounter in new parenthood.
A changing table for diapering is a staple for a reason. That’s why most nursery sets include one. However, if your baby suddenly resists diaper changes on their changing table or while lying on the floor, they’re probably ready for standup diapering.
What is standup diapering
Instead of changing wet and soiled diapers while baby is lying down, it involves changing wet and soiled diapers while standing.
How does it work
Standup diapering requires you to prepare a space first. You’ll want to ensure you have all the usual supplies within reach. Still, you’ll also want to bring it on baby’s level with a pull-up bar on the wall or in a way that uses existing furniture for them to hold on—for example, using the bathroom and inviting baby to hold on the edge of your bathtub.
Invite your baby over to the prepared space. Most families set this up in a bathroom or in baby’s nursery. “You are wet. Let’s get you dry!”
While they stand, gently undress and remove the wet or dirty diaper. Engage them in the process as they show interest.
Can you pull your shorts down?
Can you hand me a new diaper?
Can you throw out the wet diaper in the pail?
Put on the new diaper and re-dress.
Wash hands together.
