Yes, it's entirely normal for your breasts to leak when your baby cries, especially in the early postpartum period. This is your "let-down reflex" or "milk ejection reflex." It is a natural and involuntary response that helps ensure your baby receives the milk they need.

When your baby cries – or even if you hear another baby cry – it alerts your body's release of the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin is responsible for milk let-down and contraction of the muscles surrounding the milk ducts, which move milk from the milk-producing cells to your nipple. Hence, the leaking!

It's nothing to be embarrassed about. It is a testament to your body's brilliant design in being wired to respond promptly to your baby's feeding cues. However, not all breastfeeding mothers experience leaking in response to baby cries – and this doesn't mean anything is wrong, either!

As your breastfeeding journey continues, your body's response to your baby's cues may become more regulated, and leaking typically decreases over time.
