Dads also experience hormonal changes after the birth of their child. These changes can affect emotions, behavior, and physical health. If you’re feeling a little off as a new dad – rest assured this is typical. Be cognizant of the signs of postpartum depression (PPD); about 1 in 10 new dads experience PPD, too.

Overview of hormone shifts for dads:

  • Oxytocin:Oxytocin, known as the “love hormone,” is released when you bond with your baby through things like skin-to-skin time, baths, diaper changes, or talking, reading, and singing to them.

  • Testosterone:Testosterone levels decline. This can lead to feelings of fatigue, decreased sex drive, and mood swings.

  • Cortisol:Cortisol, the stress hormone, may spike to higher levels. This can lead to those feelings of anxiety, irritability, and difficulty sleeping.

Here are some tips for coping:

  • Prioritize rest, even if sleep is hard:We know this can seem impossible with a new baby, but think about how you and your partner can split some of the shifts to provide both of you some much-needed rest.

  • Eat healthy foods:Eating a healthy diet can help improve mood and energy levels.

  • Try some exercise:Exercise releases endorphins, which can help improve mood and reduce stress.

  • Spend time with your baby:Bonding with your baby is powerful. It can help reduce stress and improve your mood. Think about special things you can do with your new baby, like taking them for walks outside, doing skin-to-skin, baby-wearing, or even just singing or talking to them.

Above all, talk to your partner about how you feel. It’s normal for this to be a hard season for both of you, and the more you communicate, the stronger your start as new parents can be. Don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you are struggling with persistent feelings of isolation, overwhelm, sadness, or stress.
