Torticollis in babies, also known as congenital muscular torticollis (CMT), is a fairly common condition characterized by the tightness of the neck muscles, which can cause the baby's head to tilt to one side and their chin to turn to the opposite side. It makes it hard for baby to turn their head and can be noticeable when trying to play or breastfeed.

Common Signs

  • Resists turning their head to one side in particular

  • They may have difficulty moving their head and neck freely.

  • Torticollis can lead to flat head syndrome on one side of the baby's head due to prolonged pressure in one position.

If you notice your baby strongly preferring one side, let your pediatrician know.

The earlier torticollis is identified and addressed, the better the outcome. Treatment typically involves stretching exercises and positioning techniques to improve neck muscle flexibility and strength. Pediatricians may refer you to a pediatric physical therapist.

With proper care and exercises, the majority of babies with torticollis experience significant improvement within a few months. Be patient, and don't hesitate to seek guidance from healthcare professionals!
