The Safe Sleep for Babies Act is a significant piece of legislation designed to enhance sleep safety and reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and suffocation risk from crib hazards.
Passed in 2021, it specifically called for removing two common baby products that have confused parents for years: inclined sleepers and padded crib bumpers. An inclined sleeper positions babies at an angle greater than 10 degrees, such as the recalled Fisher Price Rock N Play Sleeper or Rock n Glide Soother. To check if a sleeper, rocker, or lounger you have has been recalled, check recalls.gov.
Why?
Inclined sleepers and padded crib bumpers β not to be confused with unpadded, mesh crib bumpers β had been linked to more than 200 infant deaths. These products are no longer legal to manufacture, sell, or distribute in any way. If you have any given to you secondhand, it's essential to stop using them immediately. Safe sleep reminders:
Use a firm and flat mattress
No extra bedding, pillows, or stuffed animals
Room share for at least the first six months with baby on their own sleep surface
