Month two brings one of the sweetest milestones: that first intentional smile!
The Social Smile: A Sign of Connection
Often referred to as social smiles, they aren't accidental or caused by gas; they are purposeful responses to their environment and the people they love – you! Unlike the reflex smile, which may happen during sleep or at random times, social smiles occur when your baby is attentive—bringing a genuine and heartwarming expression that often lights up their whole face.
Can they express sadness and anger yet?
You may also notice your baby occasionally frowning, grimacing, and furrowing their eyebrows. This doesn't necessarily indicate sadness, as babies' emotional expressions are not always linked to specific feelings like adults'. It could simply be discomfort, overstimulation, or gas pains.
Here's a rough outline of how their emotions surface:
Around 4 months, laughter emerges! Babies can also begin distinguishing the different emotional expressions of others.
Between 5 and 6 months, you may notice an early onset of stranger anxiety, bringing feelings of fear and caution.
Around age 6 months, babies begin to mimic the emotions and expressions they see in others.
Respond with warmth, reassurance, and affection, and remember that your baby's emotional expressions are a beautiful and ever-evolving part of their development.
