Get ready for an adorable milestone – your baby’s first coos!

Cooing typically emerges around two months of age. It’s hard to miss, and many parents notice it during wakeful bouts when making eye contact. While engaged, your little one may open their mouth wide to express a soft, sweet ‘ahh’ or ‘ohh.’ As your baby gets more practice, they’ll progress to harder sounds where their mouths won’t open as wide, like ‘oooo’ and ‘eeee.’

Babbling comes later

Babbling marks an exciting progression in baby’s vocal development and typically emerges around five months of age. This is when you can expect to hear sounds like ‘ba,’ ‘ma,’ or ‘da.’ Eventually, the babbles will become longer, ‘ma ma ma ma,’ before combining multiple sounds like, ‘ma de ba pa,’ until at least, they say their first words more intentionally – typically right around that first birthday!

To support your baby's first coos, engage back to show them their little voice matters! Maintain eye contact, imitate your baby's coos and sounds, and try to spark a back-and-fourth conversation with prompts like, “Tell me more about your day!”
