This is called vernix caseosa. It is not harmful and does not need to be removed right away. There are benefits to leaving some on, as well as why some parents ask their care team to delay the baby's first bath by several days. Vernix serves to: add immunity protection, moisturize baby’s sensitive skin, and aid in skin development with fatty acids, proteins, and enzymes.
