Some irregular breathing is typical in newborns, but there are a few red flags that can help you distinguish typical irregular from, well, irregular irregular: pay attention to your baby if they are breathing fast and have a persistent appearance of bluish skin. Count their breathing for a full minute. You will likely count between 40-60 breaths, which is normal for a baby. If, however, your baby pauses for longer than 10 seconds between breaths, that’s a red flag. It’s also not normal to hear wheezing or whistling sounds and see retractions or pulling in of their ribs with each breath. If you notice these flags, seek immediate medical attention.
