Burping your baby when you’re newly adjusting to the high demands of diaper changes, feedings, and sleep routines can feel tricky- to say the least. Plus, it can become discouraging if you’re patting away only to wonder if it’s even effective. What if they don’t seem to burp up any air?

Below, we’ll outline a short list of common burping positions you can try. Sometimes, one technique is better than the other for you and your own baby. Other times, no air will come up if baby simply doesn’t swallow too much air.

Burping positions worth trying:

  1. Over the shoulder

    • Sit or stand upright with your baby vertically against your chest, guiding their chin over one of your shoulders.

Support your baby with one hand and pat their back with the other.

    • Across your lap

    • Lay your baby on your lap, tummy side down, but with their head slightly elevated so that it’s above their chest.

While supporting their head, pat their back with your free hand.

    • Supported sit

    • Sit your baby upright on your lap, and lean them slightly forward, and rub their back to prompt burping.
