If you're a coffee drinker, this was likely one of the diet changes you navigated upon finding out you were pregnant. Is it safe to drink coffee while pregnant, and what about postpartum while breastfeeding?
There is generally some caution around coffee due to the caffeine intake. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that pregnant women consume no more than 200 mg of caffeine daily, meaning they can safely have one or two cups of coffee. However, some providers still tell moms to avoid it altogether.
Economist Emily Oster, author of "Expecting Better," has made it her life's work to translate what the research says behind common recommendations for pregnant and postpartum women. Here's what she had to say about caffeine caution:
"The big risk with caffeine, we are told, especially early in pregnancy, is miscarriage. When I got to the actual studies, however, I found that there is no evidence of that risk from consuming less than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day – about two cups of coffee. I also found that most of the evidence supported even up to three or four cups a day.
There did seem to be some evidence of higher miscarriage rates at six to eight cups a day."
What about postpartum?
Coffee drinking postpartum and while breastfeeding is also safe in moderation. Your body metabolizes most of the caffeine before reaching your breast milk.
That said, some women experience undesirable side effects of caffeine, like acid reflux and indigestion, and others have concerns about how some coffees are chemically processed.
With this in mind, fellow moms swear by several coffees for the prenatal and postpartum period, with claims like low acidity and water processing that can be gentler on your body. Check these brands out for yourself:
